6 Dead Link Building Techniques You Should Avoid

Acquiring the wrong varieties of inbound links will be very risky, and if effected by Google’s penguin algorithm, will be very expensive to recover from. In the end, most businesses can pay a lot of to clean up their dangerous backlinks than they might to acquire sensible ones within the first place.

Link building has modified drastically in just the previous few years. Some of the main changes are outlined in my article, “10 Differences Between Old & New LinkBuilding Techniques”. So, what varieties of links should be avoided to reduce the chance of being caught by Google’s animal hit squad?

Inbound Links to Avoid

Google has been saying for a short time that there are certain varieties of links that should be avoided. Some great examples of unhealthy links are:

Paid Links
It doesn’t matter whether you're buying or selling paid links. Within the post-Penguin era, Google has clearly declared to stay removed from these varieties of links. Even if you have got paid links from 2 years past that Google has not yet found, get obviate them as quickly as possible.

Article Directory Links
Just one or two years past, article directory links were simple to acquire, and, most importantly, they worked. Unfortunately, low-quality spun content and distribution package caused them to become severely abused. Google has penalized several article directories as a result, and this tactic is no longer helpful for SEO functions.

Link Exchanges / (a.k.a. reciprocal link schemes)
Link exchanges were common for years. The complete concept of “you link to me and I’ll link back to you” was a typical practice among webmasters. However, it became abused, and not provides any SEO value (though it's going to still have value for referral click-through traffic).

Low-quality Press Releases
Because of their low-quality content and lack of editorial tips, several of the press release submission websites are currently probably fully forgotten by Google.

Low-Quality Directory Links and unhealthy Neighborhoods in general
Many of the previous, free directory sites are de-indexed by Google. Even for those that are still indexed, it’s not a good plan to get links from them. Whereas there are still some industry-specific directories that are sensible for links (and traffic), low-quality general directory links ought to be avoided.

Link Pyramids, Wheels, and other Artificial Link Building Schemes
In the might 2013 video update, Matt Cutts, head of the Google Webspam team, referenced how penguin 2.1 improved their rule to thwart link spammers and higher live link quality. Several SEOs believe that link pyramids, link wheels, and other ways in which of artificially passing page rank through multiple layers of links is strictly what Cutts and his team are referring to during this video. Google is attempting to find different strategies similar to these, which mean they need a brief lifespan.

How to pack up Those unhealthy Links
Unfortunately, obtaining rid of these unhealthy links will be expensive. this can be particularly difficult if your website has already been hit by the Google penguin and your rankings (and a portion of your income) have disappeared. At now, an SEO audit is required to audit your entire list of links and confirm which of them need to be removed. There are professional services offered (including my company) to help with this.

After getting the list of unhealthy links, work with web site owners to remove the links. If this looks like a daunting task, it is. For sites that don’t answer your request for removal, you'll be able to use the Google disavow tool to disavow the links.
